Mary Martin is a physical therapist with more than 26 years of experience, a Pilates instructor, and the founder of Accidentally Healthy.
After spending decades helping people recover from injury and chronic pain, Mary began asking a different question:
What if health isn't something we achieveābut something that emerges through relationship?
Today, her work brings together science, movement, nervous system health, lived experience, community, and faith to help people understand health from a more connected and compassionate perspective.
Mary believes our bodies are designed with an incredible capacity to heal when we create the right conditions, and she is passionate about helping others rediscover that truth through education, conversation, and practical everyday choices.
Her mission is simple:
To help people see health not as another thing to accomplish, but as a way of paying attentionāto ourselves, to one another, and to the ordinary places where life is actually lived.
Episode 84 Summary
What if healing isn't something we achieveābut something we create the conditions for.
In this heartfelt episode of the Visible Kindness Podcast, Ed sits down with Mary Martin, a physical therapist with more than 26 years of experience and the founder of Accidentally Healthy.
Mary shares how decades of working with people, witnessing heartbreaking conditions in nursing homes during the COVID pandemic, and supporting her family through unimaginable trauma completely changed how she defines health.
Rather than seeing our bodies as problems to solve, Mary believes healing begins when we learn to listenāto our bodies, our relationships, our communities, and our faith.
This conversation explores trauma, resilience, advocacy, and the remarkable role kindness plays in helping people move forward after life's most difficult moments.
About This Episode
What happens when a healthcare professional begins asking deeper questions?
Instead of focusing only on treatment, Mary began exploring what truly allows people to heal. That journey eventually became Accidentally Healthy, a philosophy built around the belief that health isn't another goal to chaseāit's something that naturally grows when we create the right conditions.
During this conversation, Mary shares powerful stories from her career, including caring for isolated seniors during the COVID pandemic and walking beside her niece after a traumatic assault. Through both experiences, she discovered that healing is rarely just physicalāit requires compassion, connection, patience, and hope.
Together, Ed and Mary discuss:
Why health is about more than medicine.
The hidden effects of trauma.
Lessons learned during the COVID pandemic.
Supporting loved ones through crisis.
The importance of community and faith.
Why kindness is often the first step toward healing.
Whether you've experienced hardship yourself or are supporting someone who has, this episode offers encouragement, wisdom, and a reminder that healing is possibleāeven when the journey is difficult.
This Episode's Challenge
Before making an assumption about someone this week, pause and ask one genuine question.
You may discover a story you never expected.
Sometimes the greatest act of kindness is simply helping someone feel seen.

New episodes every week. Real stories. Real transformation.
